☀️ Summer Heat & UV Protection: Keeping Kids Safe

As summer arrives in South Florida, so does the intense heat and UV exposure. At PLG Kids Academy, we prioritize your child’s health and safety year-round, and summertime requires special attention. Children between the ages of 1 to 6 years are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses and sun damage due to their still-developing ability to regulate body temperature and thinner skin.

Here are key precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and Florida Department of Health to help families protect their little ones during the hottest months:

🌡️ Hydration is Key

Children should drink water throughout the day—even before they feel thirsty. Provide a labeled, refillable water bottle each day. At PLG, we encourage regular water breaks, especially before and after outdoor play.

👒 Dress for Protection

Choose light-colored, breathable clothing made of cotton or moisture-wicking fabric. Hats with brims, UV-blocking sunglasses, and closed-toe shoes help protect sensitive skin, eyes, and feet. We recommend dressing your child in lightweight, long-sleeved shirts for added sun coverage.

🧴 Apply Sunscreen Daily

According to the AAP and CDC, children older than 6 months should wear broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher). Apply it generously to all exposed skin 30 minutes before drop-off. Don’t forget often-missed spots like the ears, neck, and tops of the feet.

🕒 Avoid Peak Sun Hours

We schedule outdoor play in shaded areas and avoid peak sun intensity hours between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. NAEYC also emphasizes the importance of outdoor time in early childhood, so we balance sun protection with active, safe play.

☀️ Watch for Signs of Overheating

Common signs of heat exhaustion in children include dizziness, irritability, fatigue, and flushed skin. If your child seems unwell, we’ll notify you immediately and take appropriate steps to cool them down.

Your Role Matters!

By working together—parents and educators—we can ensure children enjoy summer safely. Please be sure to label all sunscreen, hats, and water bottles, and inform us of any skin sensitivities or medical needs.

And don’t forget to take care of yourself, too! Staying hydrated, protected from the sun, and mindful of your own well-being sets the best example for your little ones.

Let’s make it a fun, healthy summer at PLG Kids Academy! 🌴
